Fashion designer and mogul Coco Chanel was an amazing woman, no doubt. Born to a poor laundress in a small French town, Chanel rose to the top echelon of global business and French society. She is widely considered the greatest designer of all time. When Chanel died in 1971 she was worth the equivalent of $118 billion in 2015 dollars, making her one of the richest women in history.
Chanel was famous for her maxims — little bits of wisdom that showed up in magazine and newspaper interviews throughout her career. Lines like, “As long as you know men are like children, you know everything” and “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” It has been speculated that many of Chanel’s pithy lines were written with or by French poet Pierre Reverdy, one of the never-married designer’s many romantic partners.
Regardless of who penned them, Coco’s maxims contain much timeless wisdom for women – and men, too. Here are 14 of her best, as compiled by Town & Country.
