It’s house-shopping season, and there’s something special on the market. A Minneapolis home designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright has been listed by the original owners for $1.5 million.
Wright planned the three-bedroom brick home in 1958 in consultation with the owner, Dr. Paul Olfelt. It was finished in 1960, a year after Wright’s death.
The house includes many hallmarks of Wright’s distinctive style, including large windows, very few right angles, a massive hearth, a huge sloping overhang and built-in elements including bookshelves, cabinets and seating. It sits on four acres at the end of a cul-de-sac not far from downtown Minneapolis.
The 2,647-square-foot house is currently furnished in a style that reflects and complements the architecture. No word on whether it’s being offered furnished.
Zillow calls the house “a once in a lifetime opportunity,” and I’m sure that’s true. There are fewer than 300 Wright-designed homes in the world. But efforts to sell those properties in recent years have met with mixed results, in part because the cost, and, I’m sure because they lack many modern amenities and often have historic designations that limit the owner’s ability to update.
Personally, Wright’s style isn’t for me. I appreciate his talent, but the house just doesn’t do it for me. I can’t imagine spending $1.5 million for a home, but if I did, it would be something with a lot more room for my four-kid family and the very latest bells and whistles.
I’ll let someone else safeguard America’s architectural heritage.
