Police officer finally meets the man he saved nearly 20 years ago

James Poole, a Columbus police officer was taken by surprise when he was visited by an Ohio man he saved as a child from drowning nearly 20 years ago.

“I never thought that something I would do 19, 20 years later would come back, and somebody would thank me,” Poole said.

Last month, Christopher Jones said he recognized Poole’s name as the officer who pulled him from the bottom of a Columbus swimming pool when he was 5 years old on a photo posted by the police division’s facebook page.

He commented, asking if the Poole in the picture might be the same officer and from there they coordinated a surprise reunion.

Poole was told he had an interview with the media about his role as a community liaison officer when Jones showed up instead.

The reunion was emotional as they both recalled the memory of the day Jones was saved in 1997. Jones says that he was underwater for 15-20 minutes and his heart had stopped when Poole rescued him from the water.

Jones thanked Poole for saving his life and that his child wouldn’t be here without him.

“Because of you, I’m still here,” Jones told Poole. “Because of you, this 5-year-old little girl right here is here.”

This is a beautiful tribute to an officer who is doing good and bringing positive change into the world.
