What are the most trusted and mistrusted news sources? Like many things in life, the answer is probably, “it depends.” In this case, the variable is likely your political point of view. If you lean conservative, you probably have more faith in The Wall Street Journal and Fox News than The New York Times and MSNBC. Vice versa is you lean more left.
That’s pretty much the finding of a new Pew Research Center study, the results of which are illustrated in the chart below. Perhaps the most interesting finding in the survey of 300 news consumers is that overtly right-leaning media is the least trusted by people who identify themselves as having a “mixed” political philosophy. Radio talkers Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck finish near the bottom for trustworthiness with these Americans.
Also of note: the news outlets with the widest level of trust among Americans from across the ideological spectrum are British – The Economist magazine and the BBC.
Take a look at the Pew chart. Does it square with your sense of what news sources you can trust? Or is this just more media bias?
