I will admit, even for a seasoned Travel Advisor, I often don’t offer up Bermuda as the first place that comes to mind when someone asks me for a quick get-a-way! Well, that won’t happen again because Bermuda is definitely back in vogue, and it looks nothing like your grandmother’s Bermuda! With a gorgeous peak season running May through October, this pristine British Colony is merely a 2.5-hour flight from most US East Coast cities. I have traveled far and wide from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea to throughout the Caribbean and the turquoise sea water and soft pink sands rival anything I have experienced!
The island is proud and pristine, with perfect gardens, landscaping, and pastel colored homes throughout. With just a few narrow roads traversing the 21-mile long island, visitors are not allowed to rent cars, so leaving the driving to the professionals make it all that much more enjoyable. The city of Hamilton has fantastic shopping and a plethora or wonderful restaurants, in fact, dining throughout the island is truly a treat!
The people of Bermuda are a key attraction – they are so confident, friendly, genuine and interested. Not to mention, everyone knows everyone and it is just plain fun striking us a conversation wherever you can. I learned at one fun group lunch where a cast of characters kept popping up at our table to say hello, that we were the “turn up table”. It simply means that if you are fun enough and open to a little banter, they will “turn up.”
Activities include phenomenal snorkeling and scuba diving, deep sea fishing, cliff jumping, caving, and horseback riding. With 6 exceptional golf courses, tennis and terrific spas, Bermuda makes for a great off-season retreat as well with spectacular rates available throughout the Fall and Mild Winter (average temperature 65 degrees Fahrenheit!). Can you say tennis team retreat, golf outing, or good old fashion birthday celebration with friends – Bermuda could not be more affordable or easier to get to for that quick holiday fix during the U.S. winter months.
From the simply perfect Five Star Rosewood Tuckers Point, and the beautiful beach villas at Elbow Beach to the exceptionally well located and friendly Four Star resorts of Cambridge Beaches and the Reefs, I can help you identify the perfect setting – each property has its merits including the very chic “urban resort” the Hamilton Princess which I absolutely loved for terrific vibe travelers and locals alike enjoying the restaurants and convenient location.
Bermuda is about to be at the forefront again as they are spending millions of dollars to prepare for the June 2017 35th America’s Cup. Several of the teams are already there training and the buzz of these incredible athletes, their state of the art yachts, and the entourage that comes with it is truly exhilarating. The historic Royal Naval Dockyards area is being completely restored and will certainly be the place to be, in addition to the 9-mile reclaimed land being developed to host the race festivities. Views of the boats can be taken in from so many island vantage points. So between posh South Hampton, the Royal Naval Dockyard, Historic St George, dynamic Hamilton, there is so much to explore and experience! Bermuda is the one to watch, but best to do it with toes in the pink sand, a Gossling Rum Swizzle in hand!
P.S. Visitors returning to the U.S. get to clear customs and immigration before they take off from Bermuda so getting home is fast, maybe just a little too fast!
